On December 3, although Apple has basically removed all the accessories in the new iPhone box, it was reported in October that apple would have to continue to include the accessories and EarPods in its boxes when shipping them in France due to local laws.
Now, similar things will happen in Brazil. Procon-SP, the public consumer protection agency in the state of Sao Paulo, has recently decided that when Apple sells new iPhones, it is required to match a power adapter. Procon-SP notified Apple in October, asking the company to clarify the issue of removing the power adapter from the iPhone box.
Procon-SP asks Apple to provide evidence to prove that selling the iPhone without a power adapter will not harm the interests of consumers, and what is the benefit to the environment. In response to Procon-SP, Apple reiterated its view that most users already have compatible power adapters, and this decision will reduce carbon emissions.
However, the Brazilian regulator was not satisfied with the response. According to Procon-SP, the power adapter is considered an “essential part” for using Apple phones or other products, and selling iPhones without a power adapter violates the “Consumer Defense Code”.
In addition, the agency claimed that Apple did not provide sufficient evidence that removing the power adapter from the box would help protect the environment, and the company did not guarantee that it would provide the same technical support to consumers who have purchased a third-party adapter. Apple must respond to this decision by tomorrow, otherwise the company will be fined in Brazil.
Although this decision was made by the State of Sao Paulo alone, the Brazilian National Consumer Protection Agency is also considering forcing Apple to sell iPhones with power adapters nationwide.
