Top 10 cities for new energy vehicle sales in 2022Q1: BYD ranks first among all cities

At the end of April, an article by the Passenger Federation pointed out that in the first quarter of 2022, Shanghai’s new energy passenger car sales reached 58,000 units, accounting for nearly half of the new car market. The ultra-high penetration rate makes people surprised by the super substitution effect of new energy vehicles on fuel vehicles. Of course, some people will be curious, apart from Shanghai, how is the penetration rate of new energy vehicles in other cities?

However, according to the statistics of Cheyun from the dimension of the number of insurances, there is a city whose penetration rate of new energy vehicles in the first quarter of 2022 is higher than that of Shanghai, ranking first in the country. This city is Shenzhen, and its Q1 new energy vehicle penetration rate exceeds 47%, 7 percentage points higher than the second-placed Shanghai, but its total sales and new energy vehicle sales are not as good as Shanghai.

In the first quarter of 2022, in the 10 cities with the highest sales of new energy vehicles in the country, the sales of new energy vehicles in a single city exceeded 20,000 units, and the penetration rate all exceeded 20%. The lowest in Chongqing is 20.99%, and the highest in Shenzhen is 47.05% . And all 10 cities are new first-tier or first-tier cities, but the top four cities are not generally recognized as “Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen”. Hangzhou and Chengdu are ranked third and fourth respectively, and Guangzhou and Beijing are only ranked fifth and first.

In the first quarter, the sales of new energy vehicles in my country exceeded 1 million, and the penetration rate also exceeded 20%, reaching 21.09%. Among them, the top 10 brands with the highest sales accumulated more than 70% of the market share. Among them, BYD stands out a bit. Its market share in the first quarter was as high as nearly 25%, which was nearly 15% higher than the second-ranked Tesla. Changan Automobile, which ranks at the bottom of the 10th, has a market share of less than 3%.

A total of 4 models of BYD were shortlisted among the top 10 best-selling new energy models in the first quarter of 2022, making it the biggest winner in the first quarter. However, the best-selling new energy model in Q1 did not come from BYD, and the champion was picked up by Wuling Motor’s Hongguang MINI EV. Tesla’s Model Y and Model 3 were also shortlisted, ranking second and fifth respectively.

So, in the top 10 cities with the highest sales of new energy vehicles, who are the brands and models that have performed better?

One: Shanghai: The biggest winner is not Tesla

Shanghai is currently the most prosperous city in the domestic new energy vehicle market. It achieved sales of nearly 55,000 new energy vehicles in the first quarter, much higher than Shenzhen, which ranked second. However, the most popular new energy vehicle brand in Shanghai is not Tesla China from Shanghai, but BYD from Shenzhen.

In the first quarter of this year, BYD sold 13,800 new energy vehicles in Shanghai, accounting for 25.61% of the total local sales of new energy vehicles; while Tesla’s sales in Shanghai in the first quarter did not exceed 10,000, and the local The market share lags behind BYD by more than 9 percentage points, at 16.09%.

However, in the competition based on the sales of a single model, Tesla made a comeback. The brand’s Model Y ranked first in Shanghai’s new energy vehicle sales list in the first quarter, but the Model 3 only ranked fifth. Three of the top four are BYD electric vehicles.

Song PLUS and Qin PLUS were the best BYD models in the market in the first quarter, and most of the sales were contributed by DM-i models. Shanghai has a preferential license policy for PHEV models similar to BYD DM-i, which is one of the reasons why Shanghai’s new energy vehicle market is extremely hot, and it is also an important factor in BYD’s popularity in the region.

In addition, Shanghai-based Buick and Roewe brands also have a certain home field advantage in Shanghai.

Two: Shenzhen: BYD has obvious advantages

Shenzhen is not only the city with the highest penetration rate of new energy vehicles in China in the first quarter, but also the second city of new energy vehicles ranked by sales volume. Of course, this is where BYD’s base is located.

There is no doubt that BYD plays a very important role in Shenzhen’s new energy vehicle market, which is evident from its performance in the local market.

In the first quarter, BYD was the top-selling new energy vehicle brand in Shenzhen. The brand sold 13,500 new energy vehicles in Shenzhen in Q1, and its market share reached an exaggerated 35.27%, nearly twice that of the second-ranked Tesla. In the first quarter, Tesla sold 6,926 vehicles in Shenzhen.

How popular is BYD in Shenzhen? Among the top ten top-selling new energy vehicles in Shenzhen in the first quarter, BYD has four seats, and they are all in the top six. The remaining two in the top six are Tesla’s Model Y and Model 3. However, the single model sales champion is still the Model Y.

In addition, Guangdong local models such as GAC AION S, AION Y, and Xiaopeng P7 were also among the top ten best-selling new energy vehicles in Shenzhen in the first quarter. In the top ten, only two models of Tesla and Li Li ONE are non-Guangdong local brand models.

Three: Hangzhou: more flowers

In the first quarter, the city that ranked third in the sales of new energy vehicles was Hangzhou, not Beijing or Guangzhou in the “Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen”. In fact, not only did Beijing and Guangzhou fail to make the top three, they almost didn’t even make it into the top five — Guangzhou ranked fifth, and Beijing only sixth.

Similar to the pattern in Shanghai and Shenzhen, the two brands with the best sales of new energy vehicles in Hangzhou in the first quarter were BYD and Tesla, but the sales gap between the two in Hangzhou was not as wide as that in Shanghai and Shenzhen. In the first quarter, BYD delivered 6,241 new energy vehicles in Hangzhou, with a local share of nearly 17%; Tesla is also comparable, with 5,861 new car deliveries and a market share of nearly 16%.

Unlike the particularly eye-catching characteristics of local new energy vehicles shown in Shanghai and Shenzhen, Hangzhou’s new energy vehicle market is a bit of a flower. In addition to the models of Tesla and BYD, new energy models of different brands such as Ideal ONE, Xiaopeng P7, Hongguang MINI EV, Volkswagen ID.4X, and Weilai ES6 are also in the top ten. None of them are new energy vehicles from Hangzhou.

Of course, in terms of brands, Geely and Leapmotor from Hangzhou also ranked among the top ten new energy vehicle brands in Hangzhou in terms of sales in the first quarter.

4: Chengdu: Dongfeng Da has performed well on its own initiative

The fourth-ranked city in terms of sales of new energy vehicles in the first quarter is not one of the “Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen” cities, but Chengdu, an important automobile town in the west. In the first quarter, Chengdu’s new energy vehicle sales were 33,000 units, with a penetration rate of nearly 26%, higher than the domestic average.

Like the first three cities, the two best-selling new energy vehicle brands in Chengdu in the first quarter were BYD and Tesla. The former’s Model Y and Model 3 both ranked among the top ten new energy vehicle sales in Chengdu in the first quarter, and BYD’s Song PLUS, Qin PLUS and PLUS also ranked among them.

Volkswagen and Geely, which have factories in Chengdu, also ranked among the top ten new energy vehicle brands in Chengdu in the first quarter by sales, with Volkswagen ranking third and Geely ranking tenth.

However, in Chengdu’s new energy vehicle market, in addition to the outstanding performance of some popular models in the market, Fengshen E70 and Jingyi S50, two not so popular new energy vehicles, are also in the top ten.

The brands behind them, Fengshen and Dongfeng, which mainly sells the Fengxing and Jingyi series, also ranked in the top ten.

Five: Guangzhou: BYD and Tesla no longer dominate the top two

Different from the first-quarter sales ranking of new energy vehicle brands in the top four cities, where BYD and Tesla dominated the top two, the top two in Guangzhou became BYD and Guangzhou’s local brand GAC Aian, and the top four were Another is the Guangzhou local brand – Xiaopeng Motors.

In the first quarter of this year, GAC Aeon sold 5,568 vehicles in Guangzhou, with a market share of 17.21%, second only to BYD; while Xpeng Motors delivered 1,796 vehicles locally, with a market share of 5.55%.

The AION S and AION Y of GAC Aion ranked second and third in Guangzhou’s new energy vehicle sales rankings in the first quarter, but surprisingly, none of the three models under Xpeng made the top ten on the list.

Six: Beijing: BAIC New Energy has an eye-catching performance

As a member of the “Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen”, Beijing only ranked sixth in the city’s sales of new energy vehicles in the first quarter, which is somewhat surprising. In the 2021 new energy vehicle city sales rankings, Beijing is one of the top three, only inferior to Shanghai and Shenzhen.

In the first quarter of this year, Beijing’s sales of new energy vehicles were less than 25,000, making it the only city in the top six with less than 20,000 vehicles. Its penetration rate of new energy vehicles in the first quarter was 22.41%, basically the same as the domestic average.

In terms of brand sales, BYD and Tesla are still in the top two positions, the former’s market share in Beijing in the first quarter was 25%, and the latter’s 22%.

It is worth mentioning that BAIC New Energy and Jihu brands from Beijing are also in the top ten. BAIC New Energy ranks third, with 2,493 vehicles delivered in Beijing in the first quarter, with a market share of 10%. Its best-selling model in Beijing is the EU5, which ranks among the new energy vehicles in Beijing in the first quarter. Second, second only to Tesla Model Y; the Extreme Fox brand delivered 475 new cars in Beijing in the first quarter, which is 24% of its national delivery performance in the first quarter.

Li Auto, also from Beijing, also took a place in Beijing’s first-quarter sales rankings of new energy vehicle brands, ranking eighth. However, the ranking in Beijing is not the highest ranking of Li Auto’s cities. Its ranking in Shanghai and Shenzhen is higher than that of Beijing, and Li Auto is listed in the rankings of new energy vehicle brands in most other cities. Among the top ten cities, only Suzhou has not seen the ideal car.

Seven: Chongqing: The local Chang’an ranks in the top three

Not surprisingly, BYD and Tesla are the top two sales of new energy vehicle brands in Chongqing in the first quarter. The third is occupied by the local brand Changan, which delivered 2,006 new energy vehicles locally in the first quarter, occupying more than 8% of the market share, which is not very high, but it is the highest level in all cities.

In terms of model ranking, Eado New Energy and Benben from Changan Automobile both entered the top ten, ranking eighth and tenth respectively.

Eight: Suzhou: Xiaopeng enters the top three

In the first quarter of the Suzhou new energy vehicle market, BYD and Tesla are still the first and second unshakable. However, Xpeng Motors ranked third, not NIO, which held NIO DAY 2022 here at the beginning of the year. The venue of NIO DAY is usually voted by users. NIO DAY 2022 can land in Suzhou, which means that NIO users are in love with Suzhou in ten minutes, and NIO can also be ranked 4th in Suzhou.

The NIO ES6 is still among the top ten new energy vehicle sales in Suzhou in the first quarter, ranking seventh.

Nine: Zhengzhou: the only two northern cities in the top ten cities

Zhengzhou is the only northern city in the top ten cities for new energy vehicle sales in the first quarter except Beijing. It can be seen that new energy vehicles are more popular in southern cities.

Zhengzhou sold 23,000 new energy vehicles in the first quarter, with a penetration rate of 26%, even higher than Beijing. BYD and Tesla are still the most popular new energy vehicle brands in Zhengzhou.

In terms of model sales ranking, in addition to the popular models currently on the market, relatively less popular new energy vehicles such as Chery eQ1, Changan Benben, Leapmotor T03, and Nezha V also topped the list of new energy vehicle sales in Zhengzhou in the first quarter. rank of ten.

Ten: Foshan: Xiaopeng P7 summit

Foshan is the only two cities in the top ten cities that broke the pattern of BYD and Tesla ranking the top two, and the only other one is Guangzhou.

In the first quarter, the most popular new energy vehicle brands in Foshan in terms of sales volume were BYD and Xiaopeng. The previous stable ranking pattern of “BYD is Tesla” was broken, and Tesla only ranked fourth in Foshan.

Xiaopeng Motors delivered 3,167 new vehicles in Foshan in the first quarter, with a local market share of over 15%. Its two models, the P7 and P5, both ranked among the top ten new energy vehicle sales in Foshan in the first quarter, and the Xpeng P7 was the most popular model that surpassed BYD and Tesla.

In addition, Guangdong’s local Aeon brand is also in the top three. As a result, the top three best-selling new energy vehicle brands in Foshan in the first quarter were all from the local Guangdong region.

Car cloud summary

In the first quarter of this year, the cumulative sales of new energy vehicles in the top ten cities were close to 310,000, accounting for more than 30% of the national results of more than 1 million. The total car sales in these cities in the first quarter accounted for just over 20% of the national car sales. It can be seen that new energy vehicles still need to further enter the sinking market.

Among the top ten cities, the market pattern of “BYD is Tesla” is present in all eight cities, except for Guangzhou and Foshan. However, the pattern of “BYD ranks first” is surprisingly no exceptions.

In the first quarter of this year, the brand that ranked first in the sales of new energy vehicles in the top ten cities was BYD, which is somewhat surprising. This is a strong proof of BYD’s strong rise.
